Alex’s Superhero Theory
“I always knew you were a superhero, Mom,” Alex announced proudly as he wrapped his little arms around me in a warm, enthusiastic hug. His grin widened as he added, “Superheroes don’t need capes—sometimes they just eat ice cream before dinner!” I couldn’t help laughing as I tousled his hair, the tension of the night easing for the first time. “Well then,” I said playfully, “hand me the scoop and let’s make this official.” Standing beside him at the freezer, sharing a sweet, silly moment, allowed the heaviness of the evening to melt away, if only briefly, reminding me of the joy and light he brought into our lives.

Strengthening My Resolve
As uplifting as Alex’s humor and affection were, they ultimately highlighted how deeply I wanted to protect the peaceful life we had built. Later, when Jake and I found a quiet moment alone, I confided, “I can’t let Helen keep treating us this way. It isn’t healthy—for us or for Alex.” Jake’s expression shifted into one of firm agreement, his eyes reflecting the same determination I felt taking root in my chest. “Whatever it takes,” he said, fully committed to standing with me. We both understood that confronting Helen wouldn’t be easy, but we were ready to push back and defend our family from the cycle of disrespect that had gone on for far too long.
