We gathered in the living room after supper, with jokes and laughing echoing off the walls. We had an unsaid bond with each other. A lively chase ensued after Jonas gave James a shove while feigning to take one of his toys. Whispering tales from her day, Eva rested on my shoulder. We had a newfound sense of connection and felt as though we had ended a chapter in our lives. Our patchwork family was being held together by these times.

With every new bill that came in, the hold of money tightened. But since I hoped for a better future for the children, I continued to save every penny. “Why don’t we get new toys, Dad?” James once inquired while glancing at a gleaming action figure. I smiled and ruffled his hair in response, saying, “We’re saving for something special.” Each money we collected brought us one step closer to a dream that the children could not yet perceive, making those days both exhausting and encouraging.
