Unable to let it go, Tom resolved to take matters into his own hands. He took his flashlight and waited until everyone fell asleep. The home was quiet except for the ticking of the kitchen clock. He snuck out of bed and tiptoed downstairs. With each squeak of the floorboard, his resolve became stronger. He needed to know. He took a deep breath, opened the back door, and stepped outdoors.

Tom concluded that the best approach to discover the truth was to lie in wait. He positioned himself near the window, clutching the flashlight tightly in his palm. He kept peering out and eyeing the yard. The night was quiet; the only sound was the distant rustle of leaves. His heart raced with expectation. Every few minutes, he looked at the clock, expecting for the familiar barking to resume. As midnight came, the silence was broken by the customary barking. Tom’s eyes expanded. He threw on his jacket and dashed outdoors, the torch beam bouncing as he went. The barking persisted, becoming louder and more urgent. “Max!” Tom shouted as he scanned the surroundings. The noise appeared to be coming from the woods beyond the yard’s edge. He took a deep breath and stepped beyond the yard, where the darkness swallowed him fully.
