Max was only injured
Tom’s thoughts raced as Mark proceeded. “That barking you’ve been hearing is from Max. “He wasn’t dead, just injured,” Mark explained. Tom’s eyes expanded with surprise. “But I heard him barking after we buried him,” he remarked. “Yes,” Mark acknowledged, “Max had managed to crawl away and was only hurt.” I couldn’t bear to tell you until I was certain it was him.

Mark went on, “After realizing my mistake, I found Max. He was wounded, so I took him to the vet right away. They treated him, and I was hopeful he’d return to you.” Tom was startled. “So Max is still alive?” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes. “Yes, and he managed to return home on his own,” Mark remarked, his voice filled with relief.
