Tom couldn’t take it anymore at supper. “Mom, Dad, I heard Max barking last night,” he exclaimed, moving his peas about his plate. His mother halted to glance at Mark. “Tom, honey, you’re still grieving,” she remarked gently. Mark agreed and added, “Our minds can play tricks on us when we miss someone.” Tom shook his head, angrily saying, “But it seemed so real, Dad. “I know what I heard.”

Mark sat back in his chair and sighed quietly. He knew Tom was in pain. “Tom, I understand you miss Max a lot,” he said, carefully choosing his words. “But you have to remember, dogs don’t come back from the dead.” Tom stared down at his plate, feeling both sad and frustrated. “I just… I really thought it was him,” he mumbled. Mark put a soothing hand on Tom’s shoulder.
