Knocking on doors
Determined not to give up, Mary decided to knock on a few neighbors’ doors in search of more information. After several unanswered attempts, an elderly woman finally opened her door slightly, peering out with cautious eyes. “Excuse me,” Mary began politely, “I’m from the local shelter, and I’m trying to learn more about the Andersons and their dog.” The woman hesitated, her expression guarded, before revealing that she had often heard strange noises coming from the house—frequent sounds of dogs crying that had left her unsettled.

A neighbor recalled hearing strange noises and the frequent cries of dogs coming from the Andersons’ house. “It was odd,” the elderly woman remarked. “Especially at night, you could hear barking and whining. But whenever I tried to look, the Andersons would quickly close their curtains.” Mary thanked the woman and walked away, her suspicions now stronger than ever that something troubling was happening behind those closed doors.
