That night, after we’ve talked ourselves into a state of restless exhaustion, Jessica suggests we visit her dad, Stan. “Might be good to get away for a bit,” she says, her eyes searching mine for some kind of agreement. There’s sense in what she’s saying—maybe a change of scenery will help clear the fog in my head. But deep down, I’m still drowning in a sea of doubt and confusion, barely managing to keep myself afloat.

Stan, my father-in-law, is one of those guys who always has his nose in everyone’s business—curious to a fault. Jess affectionately calls him “a master of nosiness,” and it fits; he’s the kind of man who’ll hand out advice whether you ask for it or not. I already know our visit will come with a barrage of questions and unsolicited opinions, yet a small part of me wonders if his relentless curiosity might actually help us in some unexpected way.
