I laid out the inconsistencies I’d uncovered, watching his face carefully. “Why didn’t you tell me the full story?” I pressed, my tone firm but not unkind. His expression flickered—denial, guilt, and exhaustion—all chasing each other across his features. I held my breath, hoping this would finally be the moment he opened up.
