With the manager’s unanticipated help, Jake and I thought of having more fun. “What if we make things more complicated?” He smiled mischievously as he made the proposal. I was inclined to give our little game more layers, so I agreed. We tried to make the evening memorable by crafting original jokes and stories to look back on in the future, as we knew we would soon have to face the music.

We were unwinding when Karen was alerted to something else by a persistent knock. She appeared calmer as she opened the door. “I believe I understand what has been going on,” she declared. Jake and I looked at each other with amusement, admiring her persistence. We made the decision to tell her that it’s all part of the experience. Her initial annoyance gave way to an almost hesitant involvement, and she now appeared to be more amused.
