I could hear Karen talking loudly with guests about her ambitious ideas and thoughts as we formed a line for the procession. She had a talent for deflecting attention from significant events. Heads turned as she gave a theatrical cough just as I was approaching the altar. The bouquet toss took place amid the applause following the vows. Lisa, my best friend, was eagerly prepared. Unsure of how to respond, the throng became silent. Jake and I exchanged a knowing glance as I pretended to smile and played along, murmuring to him, “This is ridiculous.”
