Karen stood looking around the strange hallway, confused. “I don’t think this is right,” she said. I moved forward and said, “Perhaps the front desk could assist? She paused, appearing a little disorganized. What a turn! Jake reassured her in a low voice that it was only a minor detour gone crazy. She frowned, but everything appeared to be in order. Uncertain of what might happen, I observed her curiously as the situation started to dawn on her.

Karen vanished into another hallway, and we watched her go. I felt like everything had gone our way, and Jake and I exchanged triumphant glances. I savored our time apart from her, knowing that we would only have to deal with the truth afterwards. Elaine, who could hardly contain her laughter, caught up to us. We were dealing with a secret victory that, for the time being, gave us a small victory in unison.
