It was important for them to take it slowly as they approached the iceberg. If even one piece of ice went under the boat, the boat might suffer some damage or even capsize completely. They did not want to get stranded there because it would spell doom for both them and the animal. This is the reason they made sure to approach with as much caution as possible.

The movement of the boat got more precarious, so Mallory asked her friends to be even more careful. They were all curious and excited as they approached the iceberg. However, not once did they forget to act carefully. The other crewmembers kept an eye out for any potential dangers.
