Gym soccer
In the gym, they played soccer with the confidence of kids who felt they owned the place. The ball shot toward me, whizzing past my head by mere inches. “Heads up!” one of them yelled, followed by a burst of laughter, as if it were all part of the game. I stepped aside, masking my irritation and pretending it didn’t bother me. They had no idea how close they’d come to causing real trouble. All I could do was hope it wouldn’t happen again.

Their laughter echoed around me, sharp and careless, as if everything were a joke. They acted as though I didn’t exist, just a fleeting shadow in the backdrop of their day. I tried to block out the noise, focusing intently on scrubbing the gym floors. “Look out!” one of them shouted, laughing as their pass veered off course. I kept my head down, my attention fixed on the task at hand, while their game thundered on around me.
