Sarah was reluctant to part with the creature, but finally agreed, trusting the vet’s promise. “You’ll take good care of the animal, won’t you?” she asked with tear-filled eyes. “Absolutely, we promise,” Dr. Lewis assured her, patting her gently on the shoulder. Jane knelt down next to Sarah and hugged her tightly. “It’s only for a little while, darling,” she whispered. With a heavy heart, Sarah handed over the creature and watched as Emily carefully placed it in a special carrier bag.

Emily gently picked up the creature and took it to the lab. “We’ll let you know as soon as we have some answers,” she said, before disappearing through the double doors. The family stayed behind in silence, the air filled with a mixture of fear and curiosity. “I hope it’s not in pain,” Sarah whispered, tears threatening to spill. Jane pulled her close and murmured soothing words that sounded a little hollow even to her own ears. The agonizing wait began anew.
