Silent speculation
Jane and Tom were talking quietly, speculating about what the creature might be. “Do you think it’s some kind of mutant?” asked Tom. Jane shook her head. “I don’t know, but it’s definitely something unusual.” Their whispered conversation was repeatedly interrupted by glances at Sarah, who was trying to hide her own tension. “We’ll find out,” Jane said, even though her voice was trembling. The unknown weighed heavily on everyone.

Sarah had no idea of the seriousness of the situation and wanted above all to make sure that her new pet was safe. She played with her fingers and focused her attention more on the animal than on the worried faces of the adults. “I hope it’s all right,” she whispered. Jane gave her a reassuring smile, but there was a shadow of worry in her eyes. “It’s going to be okay, sweetie,” she said, patting Sarah’s head. Despite the tension, Sarah’s innocent desire to see her pet well kept everyone grounded.
