Eyes full of curiosity
A few other pet owners cast curious glances at their unusual “pet”. A woman with a fluffy cat and a man with a parrot eyed the animal attentively and whispered to each other. “What a strange-looking lizard,” one of them murmured, eliciting a nervous smile from Jane. Tom tried to ignore the curious glances and concentrated on keeping Sarah quiet. The increasing attention in the room created an uncomfortable tension, but no one said anything else.

The family sat down and waited to be called, unaware that this visit would be anything but routine. Sarah fidgeted with excitement and nervousness and held the animal close to her. “Do you think it’s sick?” she asked quietly. “We’ll know in a minute,” Tom replied reassuringly. In the oppressive silence, the ticking of the wall clock seemed to get louder and louder, as if every passing second was unnecessarily prolonging the wait.
