Dr. Lewis placed the creature on the examination table, where the bright light from the flickering fluorescent tubes made the scales clearly visible. He adjusted his glasses and leaned forward intently as he inspected the animal. “Hmm, very interesting,” he murmured quietly to himself. Jane and Tom exchanged a worried glance, while Sarah stared at the table, wondering what the vet would discover.

The creature wriggled slightly, whereupon Dr. Lewis frowned and tilted his head to observe the animal’s movements more closely. “Wait a moment,” he said in a serious voice, reached for a pair of tweezers and gently touched the creature. The tiny animal responded with a short flick of its tail, and Jane clutched Tom’s arm tighter, sensing something unusual was going on. “What’s wrong, Doctor?” she finally asked anxiously.
