This can’t be right
Suddenly, Dr. Lewis’ face went pale and he whispered, “This can’t be right.” Jane and Tom looked at each other in shock, then back at the vet. “What do you mean?” Jane asked in a shaky voice. Dr. Lewis shook his head in disbelief, his eyes wide open, hastily closed the book and took a deep breath. Sarah squeezed her father’s hand tighter as she sensed the seriousness of the situation. The vet’s reaction added an eerie weight to the already tense atmosphere.

Advice from colleagues
Dr. Lewis hastily excused himself to consult his colleagues, leaving the family in growing tension. “I’ll be right back,” he promised and left the room. Jane, Tom and Sarah stood there in silence, the silence ringing in their ears. “What do you think it is?” whispered Sarah. “I’m not sure, sweetheart,” Jane replied, making an effort to hide her concern. Tom paced restlessly back and forth in the small examination room as he tried to work out in his mind what the vet had discovered.
