Focus On The Mission
Even as all of this was going on around us, Jake’s attention was fixed on the work at hand. He grumbled, unfazed by the mayhem above, “Nature waits for no one.” His hands moved precisely, using all of his knowledge to assist the lioness. I was astounded by his unity of focus as I observed. Here was a man who was unrelenting in his quest of the natural world, ready to confront its urgency head-on. We could all see that Jake would keep going until he had accomplished everything.

A number of tourists raised their cameras to record scenes that will be replayed innumerable times. While others entered updates and captions on their phones, one muttered, “You’ve got to document this.” It seemed as though the globe might be connected to this developing drama by sharing this experience online. The sounds and images turned into a soundtrack, documenting a moment of human-animal bonding as well as a safari. We were all involved in this narrative in the end.
