The tension was broken by Jake’s voice. “Remain composed, everyone.” “Don’t make any abrupt movements,” he said in a calm voice. A uneasy calm descended upon us as we held fast to his words. Like an anchor in the storm, he kept working. His caution reverberated in our ears, serving as a reminder that exercising moderation was essential to our safety. We cautiously observed the new lion in the hopes that it would become disinterested and go. Jake was our guide and the focal point of our unstable world on our unplanned journey.

The strain mounted with every second that went by. Our already uncomfortable encounter took a turn for the worst when the most recent lion showed up. Sarah whispered, her worried gaze sweeping the plains, “They just keep coming.” We found it more difficult to focus as we were always aware of everything going on around us. The once-exciting safari was now a nerve-test that required us to be alert. I could feel the strain on everyone, the thinned boundary between determination and dread.
