I began planning the family night with the intention of encouraging honest conversation and rebuilding a sense of togetherness. Rather than framing it as a serious discussion, I wanted it to feel relaxed and natural, a simple evening where we could reconnect without pressure. I imagined us sitting around the kitchen table, sharing stories, small laughs, and maybe even a few awkward moments that could break the ice. When I floated the idea, the response was far from enthusiastic, but I chose to remain hopeful. My stepdaughter reacted with a familiar eye roll, clearly uninterested and glued to her phone as she questioned whether it was really necessary. I reassured her it wouldn’t take long, forcing optimism into my voice. My husband’s reaction was subdued, a noncommittal shrug paired with a brief nod. While it wasn’t the eager support I hoped for, I took it as a small step forward, reminding myself that meaningful progress often unfolds slowly.
