Every hour brought a stinging agony that burned from the inside of her lower abdomen. Although Lisa initially tried to ignore it, she soon found herself in the emergency room, where a doctor was doing tests on her. As the doctor reported his findings, Lisa’s mother sat next to her. “Kidney failure,” the physician said.

As the doctor went on to outline the best course of action, everything became hazy. “Your kidneys cannot filter waste products out of your blood.” It would only get worse, even though Lisa believed that was the worst news she would hear that day. The next few hours were silent as Lisa’s mother tried to contact her but received no answer. Lisa was waiting in her room in a hospital gown when her father arrived at the hospital. Lisa urgently required a kidney transplant, the doctor told him.
