Time seemed to halt as we sat there listening to the lawyer’s words. Everyone was anticipating their turn, so I was taken aback when he reached me. Every pulse of my thumping heart could be heard in my ears. I became aware that my life was about to alter as the lawyer went on. With a surprised expression, my ex sat there. He never anticipated this, I knew. He left me for a “fertile woman,” and now he was just as shocked as I was. I waited to hear the rest while I sat still. I couldn’t believe what was occurring, and every phrase felt greater than the one before it.
