Even as the lawyer proceeded, I couldn’t get rid of the impression that things were moving quickly. The mother of my ex appeared perplexed and perhaps even agitated. Each member of the family appeared to be acclimating to a new reality. His father had a scheme that had been kept a secret up until this point, and we were all involved in this weird, developing mystery. I sat in silence, wondering what all of this meant for me.

Without using words, everyone’s responses conveyed volumes. The older brother of my ex gave him a startled and worried look. I became aware that I couldn’t fully read the emotions in the room since everyone had their own interpretations of what the will signified. I waited, thinking about what this bequest might mean for me in the future. I attempted to view the perplexity as an opportunity for something fresh.
