Max was upset, but John looked over the surveillance tape and saw nothing out of the ordinary. He showed Emily the clips and said, “It’s clean.” Hours of tapes were viewed in the hopes of identifying something strange, but they found nothing. John tried to minimize the issue by speculating that “perhaps he just heard a rat or something.” They were on edge, though, because Max kept seeming upset despite the lack of proof.

John chose to do his own inspection of the basement since he was dissatisfied with the video alone. With a flashlight in hand, he walked down the groaning steps, Max following. He moved boxes and looked around for any indications of disruptions or intruders. “Everything looks fine,” he remarked out loud, but Max wasn’t persuaded, and his demeanor remained attentive and nervous. John sighed, growing increasingly irritated every second that went by without any responses.
