After the phone call, the family gathered in silence around the kitchen table, each lost in their own thoughts as they digested the information. “Could it really be man-made?” wondered Erika aloud, still trying to wrap her head around the idea. The usually distracted children listened attentively as Mark explained the geologist’s theory as best he could. Everyone was skeptical – it sounded like something out of a movie – but the hypothesis raised a number of disturbing possibilities. “I don’t think it’s likely, but at this point… who knows?” Mark finally admitted, his voice heavy with the uncertainty that had been growing inside him for days.

The next day, consumed by curiosity, Mark immersed himself in research into sinkholes caused by human activities. He spent hours scouring the Internet, finding reports of old mining tunnels, clandestine excavations and poorly designed drainage systems that had caused similar collapses. However, the more he read, the more divided he felt – each article seemed to both support and disprove the geologist’s theory, plunging him into a state of confused skepticism. Erika silently watched him over her shoulder, her eyes fixed on the screen and her mind buzzing with questions. What was really under her property? And, even more disturbingly, who had put it there?
