As Maria thought more about it, a troubling possibility began to take shape in her mind. Perhaps Michael was being exploited by his employer, and there was a reason he was so secretive about his workplace. Maybe his job required extreme secrecy because the company was involved in something illegal or unethical. Though it seemed far-fetched, the more she considered it, the more plausible it became that Michael’s endurance and silence were signs of something more serious than just long working hours.

Even if Maria’s suspicions were only partly correct, she felt that Michael clearly needed assistance. He was obviously enduring hardships that most people couldn’t even imagine, and he would likely never ask for help himself. At the very least, she thought, contacting someone who might be able to intervene could provide a chance to uncover the truth and perhaps improve his situation, even if he didn’t realize he needed it.
