Gladys and Carla Spizzirri are working as real estate agents and they have seen many types of houses for as long as they have been working in this industry. One day, they got a call to visit 148 Jane Street. They did not expect too much as the house looked ordinary if looked from the outside. The house was owned by an elderly lady called Joyce. She contacted the two agents to evaluate it. The pair is bound to be astonished to see the interior of what seems to be nothing special.
A Regular Home
This story is proof that a person should not judge a book by its cover. We are going to have a look at what has been in hiding from a 96-year-old woman in her house in West Toronto. Looking at its exterior, it could easily be compared with just any house. But, the time when it was put up for sale, people learned more about the home. In case this house interests you, you have to know that the same woman has been its occupant for more than 70 years. It pays to visit it first before getting in touch with any realtor. The beauty that’s hiding behind the ordinary-looking exterior of this house will undoubtedly stun anyone who sees it.
Looking To Sell
Only a few people had the opportunity to get inside this house and also, very little is known about it. In fact, what the public only knows is the information that it has acommodated the same people for a long while. Besides that, nothing else was learned of it. Carla and Gladys, the realtor duo, got a phone call and was told of a house that the owner wanted to sell. Right away, the pair had to check it out first.
Just A Regular Day
It was a normal day for these sisters and for everyone at work. They went on with their usual routine in the office. Despite the fact that the Spizzirri sisters, Carla and Gladys, shared ownership of the Agency, they most often worked separately. Their dynamics changed, however, by the time they recognized the huge amount of success they had when they worked together. Their strengths complimented each other perfectly as one is good at looking for listings which can be put on sale and the other is a skillful sales talker and deals well with possible clients. The pair works with a great deal of efficiency and effectiveness. Who would ever want to change this?
Gladys and Carla have acquired knowledge and have eventually been made experts about the detailed points and facts of their business through years of experience. They are considered masters who have the necessary skills to solve any problem that might come their way. Having been in the industry for a while, one would expect them to not be surprised by anything anymore. Once in a while, though, surprising moments do happen and this would be one of those.
The Phone Rings
These realtor ladies did not have even the slightest hint that from a simple phone call, their lives were about to change. The phone did ring and they were not ready for what was coming. It can be thought that even professionals in the industry are not exempt from surprises.
A Call From A Stranger
As the phone in the office of the Spizzirri sisters is in constant ringing at all times, they picked up the call as they normally did. When they heard Joyce, the elderly woman who was thinking of putting her house on sale, that was when things started to change.
Joyce remained apprehensive and wasn’t really keen on the idea of putting her house up on the market in spite of calling the agency already. But as she was a person of persistence, the sisters believed that she would possibly sell her house in the end. True enough, she soon let out a secret that bewildered the duo, a secret that would mark a pivotal point in their lives.
A Different Kind Of Emotion
The majority of the people who decide to sell their homes share the same idea and that is to begin a new stage in their lives. They feel that this is the appropriate thing to do and the primary reason they get in touch with real estate agents. However, Joyce had a totally different situation and was not quite ecstatic over the fact that she was selling her house.
Usually, when having conversations with customers, real estate agents use their sixth sense. The two sisters had an instinct that the person who phoned them was hiding something. That secret had to be a reason which could make it hard to sell. Disagreeable events in the past could have a negative impact on the sale, and they knew it very well from experience.
The situation that Joyce attempted to conceal was not a common problem for house owners. She did not try to hide anything such as equipment that wasn’t working or about the cleanliness. No, her secret was even greater. Nonetheless, Gladys and Carla were fixed to their guns and were ready to confront whatever challenge was ahead.
No Way To Prepare
Carla and Gladys had been given the responsibility of making the sale of the house that the elderly woman owned. As a team, and with their expertise and prowess, they could make good sales for their customers. This tandem was a strong force that aimed to become the most influential in the whole real estate industry. Yet, there wasn’t anything that could have readied them for the thing that they would see when they arrives at the property on 148 Jane Street. Within the walls of what seems to be an ordinary home, are things ready to astonish anyone who sees them.
These sisters have been in the business for so long they have become confident that they had witnessed all things one can possibly ever lay their eyes on. They had surpassed literally every situation a realtor could be in, even those that caused their colleagues to surrender. Because of this, they managed to succeed in every endeavor. Before getting inside Joyce’s house, Clara and Gladys already imagined what the interior would look like. They thought of a great many possibilities, even crazy ones, but not one of those their minds could have conceived.
Hesitant And Weary
One of the sisters, Clara, was at the office when the woman phoned. It wasn’t anything special if one thinks of how successful they have been as years passed. There wasn’t any hint of enthusiasm in the voice of the caller and to say the least, she even sounded reluctant. Nevertheless, she introduced herself and said her name was Joyce. Previously, she was just one of the many others who sell their properties. So, they did their best to reassure the woman that they would put up the optimal offer they could. Carla rarely expects to get a mansion or a deluxe house to deal with. As a matter of fact, she set her mind to see the worst the moment Joyce told her how old she was.
Old age is quite commonly associated with a home not well-taken care of, one that has rooms with things everywhere – chaotic, in other words – and this is mainly why she did not have high expectations towards the house. It is usually more difficult to sell properties like this. Strangely, Carla hoped this might not be a usual case. Joyce said she was 96 years old and had gathered a variety of household stuff. Despite her age, her speech was notably clear and easy to follow. For someone as accomplished an agent as Carla, other tiny details no longer thrilled her. However, she began to feel hopeful and excited about the property.
Being in the real estate business for so many years had made the realtor sisters familiar with the twists and turns of Toronto. They are adept with dealings of properties in popular areas in the city. At times, on a lucky day, they would get to deal with properties that need very little refurbishments and sold them immediately. They were not certain this would be the same for Joyce’s property, but they felt it wouldn’t.
Because Joyce wasn’t really adamant to sell her house, Carla and Gladys had to see it for themselves. Joyce told the realtor sisters something pretty astonishing which would certainly impact the selling process when she got in touch with the realtors.
A Living Legend
At that time, Joyce was already 96 years old, but she unusually was still comprehensive and easy to follow. Carla Spizzirri was dazzled because she has to make her voice louder when having conversations with her grandmother. How Joyce had been taking care of herself over time and was quite a treat to the eyes. The real surprise, however, is waiting to be seen inside Joyce’s house. And this, was much more peculiar.
The two realtor sisters felt increasingly worried as their ocular visit nears. But above all, they were more concerned with the amount of time and effort they would spend to have the house cleared up in case their expectations were correct. They were particularly horrified when they went to a house of a hoarder. And they thought it is possible that Joyce had a collection of junk and debris stored in her home for over 70 years.
Based on the exterior of the house, it was a typical one. This is the main reason Clara and Gladys were not ready for something beyond belief that is waiting for them to see. As soon as they got inside the house, they understood what Joyce was referring to.
A Looming Disaster
That house had been Joyce’s home for 70 years. The only alteration that occurred during that whole period was the renovation of the kitchen. This information made the sisters dread the surveying process of the property. If for that very long time, the tenant kind of disregarded it, then the only possibility is that it was in very poor condition!
Joyce was constantly showing some reluctance in her attitude so the sisters’ worry about what’s inside the house heightened. They were taught a lesson in a most unpleasant way and this lesson was if a seller isn’t firm in his decision to sell his property it usually because it is in a very bad situation. Just like many others, this particular seller was a hoarder and it meant the house could be cramped and full of her collection. It this is true, it had to be restored and overhauled so it could interest clients to buy. At this time, they had yet to see the house’s interior.
Still So Hesitant
At this point, the uncertainty that the pair had remained as they hadn’t inspected the inside of the house. Factors like renovation expenses and restoring it to a suitable condition to comfortably accommodate its future tenants had to be put into consideration. In addition to this, Joyce’s behavior towards the sale of her house also concerned the sisters.
Making Up Her Mind
The girls were greatly affected by the hesitant tone Joyce had when she first phoned them. Nevertheless, the elderly house owner mentioned that despite the fact that the house had been her abode for more than seven decades, it was really her intention to have it sold. It should feel very sad to give up a place where you’ve lived most of your life and surely had witnessed many events in it. So, it was perfectly understandable that Joyce was a little indecisive. Unfortunately, this fact wasn’t in favor of Carla and Gladys.
The girls had to do an ocular inspection of the property at 148 Jane Street prior to making any decision. They knew very well that some improvements had to be done in the house before they could make any offers to interested customers.
The realtor pair decided on a time and day when they would visit the home as it would be extremely useful to see which parts needed to be rehabilitated. They had no idea of what was before them. The duo were in absolute awe when Joyce finally revealed to them what she had been keeping.
Not All Bad
They were fortunate enough that where the house was situated was much better than they had previously thought. It was in an area called Old Mill, an ideal location for many of the Torontonians. The value of the properties in that region had been increasing for quite awhile now and they were certain that they could put up a fairly reasonable offer for the home.
Getting An Estimate
This pair of realtors have also already sold some properties in this neighborhood with very high value. However, they didn’t know how much Joyce’s house would amount to. After all the calculations, the sisters reached an estimate of the property’s worth – $968 000. This went over what they initially expected and which deemed very profitable for their business.
The manner in which Joyce was talking made the sisters pause and contemplate. Could it be the fact that she was giving up her home that devastated her or was it because of the truths behind her secret? Logically, it is normal to have a mix of different feelings when leaving a place you’ve called home for the longest time. However, if the real situation is neither of these, it would probably be too heavy a load for these girls to carry.
Seven Decades’ Worth of Memories
Carla and Gladys discovered that the house had been in its original state for seven decades. With all the years they had spent in the real estate business, they immediately jumped to the likelihood that the house suffers from neglect if this was the case. A house which has not been properly tended for seventy years is probably unlivable. However, they were not aware that they were wrong at that thought. As it can be seen, they did not know that the house that looked like any other had a surprise waiting for them.
Messy And Uninhabitable?
The girls began to come up with ideas as to the appearance of the house. Their worry increased as they thought more about it. They were thinking how a person who was nearly a century old could maintain a house in its livable state. Seven decades is no joke and majority of the people tend to make do with refuse. Their minds were fixed to see a house that would need an overhaul and not just minor fixing or redecorating. This also meant that a huge amount of money and energy would be spent. However, this idea would be proven wrong when they got to the property.
A Change in Plans
The sisters were faced with a new hindrance. It looked like Joyce wanted to take back her decision to sell her house. The difficulty of that thought started to grow more evident. But, who wouldn’t feel that way if you were in Joyce’s shoes? Giving up a home that has seen memories of three quarters of a century could only be one of the hardest things to think of, let alone seeing it becoming a home of new residents. For us, it is easy to comprehend. No person would ever want to sell the home they had lived in for nearly all their lives.
Persistence Is The Key
Regardless of the fact that Carla and Gladys had all kinds of unpleasant ideas imaginable, they were firm in their decision to sell the house due to its optimal location. To their thinking, it would be easy to finesse clients who would willingly bear the expenses to rehabilitate the house after the deal closed. They were certain that anything spent for it would equate its value in spite of it being a huge mess filled with a collection of both the pleasant and the unpleasant.
Taking A Peek Inside
The sisters were already in a difficult situation, but they were well aware of the importance of seeing the house for themselves first of all. They are still in the process of settling things, but Carla and Gladys had to check the home interior to see whether chances of sale were huge or slim. They already knew where it was as Joyce had given them the exact location and a picture of its exterior. Joyce eventually approved that they visit after some convincing had been done.
Much Better Than Expected
The house was similar to a precious stone that’s in hiding in the Old Mill neighborhood of Toronto. Carla and Gladys Spizzirri are two very successfull realtors who do excellent work in house renovations and who sell homes at very high value. They are also tasked to sell the aforementioned house. However, they still had no idea whether this piece of accommodation would do well or not. These agents were not expecting to discover a treasure cove that contains things of historical significance which would profit them more than they could think of anyway. As you will see, it shocked them to see the beauty of the ancient house which they thought of at first as derelict.
Preservation of History
Whether it was Joyce’s name or another’s in the documents, it cannot be denied that her house wasn’t ordinary. The architecture of the building was so intricate it would be unjust not to give it a spot in history. How Joyce was able to keep even the tiniest details of her home would surely inspire whoever will own it next. It definitely was cared for with great attention for 72 long years so we are hopeful that the new set of owners will continue to give as much care as it has been receiving from 7 decades ago. What shocked the sisters was the fact that the house didn’t need anything done because it was perfectly maintained.
Just Like The Brady Bunch
The inside of the house had scrupulous and antique designs, anyone could undoubtedly tell that it was built in a different time period. Gladys Spizzirri even joked that the furniture and decorations were inspired during The Brady Bunch era. The home was ancient, but Joyce had been doing a very good job at keeping it in its best state. Joyce’s insurance company must have agreed. The place is extremely beautiful and it became even more amazing once you know that it was designed by the family. Passion and love were the primary ingredients in the making and building of the house and not any one can deny this.
An Outlet For Her Creativity
It should be known that Joyce has a hectic timetable, but sees to it that she still spends time on her crafts. At times when she takes a break from being a dressmaker, she uses that time to hone her interior designing abilities. This seems to be the area where she uses her surfeit of artistry and to us, her work is exceptional. During that period, she and her family were under the stress of an ongoing war economy but this didn’t hinder her from continuing what she loved doing.
The day of the house visit finally arrived and when the sisters got to 148 Jane Street, it looked exactly the same as in the photo they had received from Joyce which could only mean it looked ordinary, just like any other home. It was a kind of relief, though, that it didn’t appear to have suffered from neglect despite gaving been there for more than 70 years. They entered and prepared themselves for everything upsetting. As they were coming towards it, they discovered something unexpected. Evern though it appeared typical, it housed bewildering secrets.
A Secret No More
As we’ve mentioned, it is not a smart idea to judge a book by its cover! Carla and Gladys could certainly prove this the moment they visited Joyce’s home. The house surely took them back to an era in the past and could have been famous because of the unique nostalgic feel. Unfortunately, virtually no one knew of the house until she decided to put it up for sale and just live in a retirement home. She wasn’t a professional interior designer, but she absolutely had what it takes to enter the industry. Taking into account her talent, it would have given her a great deal of fortune and wealth. The secret has been revealed and the world has, at last, found out that she is an incredible designer.
Success With Negotiations
It was necessary to pay the property a visit before they could carrynon with the follwing steps. After a series of agreements and compromises, the lederly houseowner finally gave a go signal to continue. Now that everything is where it is supposed to be, they made an arrangement to visit so Gladys and Carla could personally see it. Their primary concern was being welcomed by a huge amount of trash when they get there. But, by the moment they arrived, it would be fair to say that they were stunned by what their eyes were laid on.
A Brick House
From the time Joyce’s secret was revealed, numerous interior designers from various regions of the country have paid a visit to see what has been done in her brick house. They could quickly realize that she preferred using neutral colors to bright ones. Besides, her home was also filled with hold furnish and wallpaper with metallic tones, but it was quite easy to determin which designs she loves the most as floral patterns dominated the whole interior. We supposed that the house didn’t look the same way as when she started living there when she was only 24 years old. The transformation she has done was unbelievable.
A Hidden Gem
If you think of the grandeur of the house, you would think that it would instantly become a kind of a tourist attraction. However, the truth is that nobody had any idea what’s been in storage in the brick house. Joyce is known not as someone who designs the inside of a house but she could have been pretty successful at it if she willed so. News of the house took off the moment she made a decision to sell it. Nowadays, literally everyone in the area where she lives knows of the excellence of this house’s interior.
A Thorough Investigation
The knowledge that the property was still in its best condition which has very stunning interiors is good but unfortunately it is not enough in itself so Gladys and Carla are still required to hold a more detailed assessment of the house. The exterior looked like no fixing has to be done, kind of unloaded some amount of worry for the girls. But, as soon as theur foot made its first step inside the house, they were completely out of words to see its magnificence. Nevertheless, they still had to thoroughly examine it for any damage in its foundation and overall structure.
When a person is outting up a house on sale, it is normally more advantageous of it is already complete with necessary equipment and furniture so that the new owners do not have to burden themselves about having more things to bring in. as for Joyce, this could cause a sort of apprehension for buyers with regards to this point. It is true that the house stands proud because of its well-kept interiors and a collection of antique pieces that could be traced even back to the 40s, but sad to say, the new homeowner would have to be burdened with carrying his own furniture as the house in 148 Jane Street is unfurnished.
Things Worth Keeping
The reason Joyce would prefer not leaving her furniture in her would-be former house is comprehensible. It was lucky enough that there is someone she could pass her furniture on – her daughter. It is possible that it the fact that she could continue taking care of her mother’s things was a relief to Joyce. It makes perfect sense that she chose this set up over another. Majority of the items are antiques which are of good taste and maintained well. To think of it all, she intended to sell the house exclusive of the stuff it contains. And another thing is, we are certain that it is difficult to leave such a wonderful place in exchange for a retirement home.
Honing Her Talents
Her two-floor house was one of her outlets for her creativity. She had all the pleasure to decorate it to the fulfillment of her heart! On moments when she has time to do things other than sewing, one would find her designer her house with whatever she prefers. She put in much effort to transform her simple accommodation into something comparable to a 5-star hotel without spending as much. Her aesthetic genius and being resourceful was her key to be successful in this area and now her previously simple home has become extremely valuable. There was only one thing that made her house reach this state, and that is own imaginativeness.
Throwback To The ’50s
Atop her innate creative abilities, she was even more lucky that her family lent her a helping hand as every one of them contributed to the beautification and the transformation that their house has now. But, it was still Joyce who was the head of it all. She acted the creative director and it was her choice that was always followed from the sheets to curtains and of course, the furniture. After the Second World War, they enjoyed more freedom. The economic conditions became better and designing houses with the 50s styles increased in popularity.
At the time, all people had the inclination to bright hues. A large number of people styled their houses with shades of neon green, yellow and red. Houses regardless of size were decorated in this manner, as those colors virtually equated to a brighter future following the war. However, some families did prefer softer pastel tones. How wonderful could everything have looked with all those mix of very bright and soft colors!
Joyce had much imspiration at the time she transferred to Bloor West Village and turned the simple house into something grand. In fact, the home now serves like a gateway to the ‘50s as she successfully preserved the same pieces of furniture, decorations, colors and appliances that date back from that time. There was more about Joyce, though. She managed to make her house appear as if it days and years did not pass by. This is the secret why her things looked like they have just been bought or installed in her house. Joyce was specifically attentive on the maintenance of her place.
The word ‘impressive’ does not fall short in describing the place, but there is more to consider than what the eyes can see. When checking out houses to purchase, we should remember to see if there are any faults in the electricity line, if pipes need any repairs and if heating works well. Considering the age of the house, it is quite impossible to imagine that this does not suffer from any of these. And this can only be knows through examining every part of it in detail. However, after the inspection, the veteran realtors were completely surprised to learn that the house needed no mending though they knew well that at least once Joyce had to spend for improvements.
During the interview, Joyce enumerated her reasons behind the choice of colors in her house and that is, she likes mixing and matching things and soft colors. With regards to color schemes and palettes, she opts for color combinations than single bright hues. Use of aqua, paster pink, purple is very noticeable. What’s more, her pieces of furniture, wallpapers, paints, and home decors in general, are in sea foam tones. She is more keen on shades that do not hurt the eyes. These soft colors perfectly match with her already well-lighted space through natural light and give a relaxing feel.
One would easily think that the house wasn’t seventy years old had he not seen it’s interior. It was maintained very well even to the minutest part of it. We could think that she must have spent a huge amount for its maintenance, but it wouldn’t matter now as she was able to do it very successfully. Everyone can see the results of her hard work now and we can only be hopeful that the new occupants will give the same amount of value and care for the house. Her daughter said that Joyce is fond of purchasing pink things and particularly takes pleasure in her favorite part of the house – the pink room.
All that they feared and worried about immediately disappeared as soon as they set foot in the house. It didn’t look anything like they imagined! Firstly, it looked new as if the things inside had just recently been delivered from 1940. For the longest time they have been realtors, the sisters Gladys and Carla have been to many different properties but nothing could equal to this spectacle.
Stunned Into Speechlessness
As they were going around the house, courtesy of Joyce, the sisters fell in love with just about everything in it. Maybe even you, when you see for yourself all the decorations and all that it houses would fall in love, too. But as they saw more of the house, rhey started to see other factors to concern themselves about. They saw something that would be an obstacle in the sale of the house.
Gladys and Carla truly had an admiration of the property and the way it was maintained, however, it cannot be denied that not all people would really be interested in it. It was not an innate taste, to say the truth. Some clients would not have the same opinion on the choice of colors, especially the pink shades and soft pastels. It could be said that it wasn’t really versatile and not an easy choice, particularly for men, and this could cause delay of sale.
