Warding off danger
Mark, wielding a baseball bat, shouted firmly at the intruder, his voice breaking the silence of the night like thunder. The figure at the window stepped back abruptly, surprised by the sudden confrontation, and in an instant turned and disappeared into the darkness. Erika, still on the line with the police, recounted the events with a trembling voice and a pounding heart. When the immediate danger passed, the couple were overcome by a mixture of relief and vulnerability, aware of how exposed they really were.

Shortly after Erika’s call, the police arrived at the scene, but their response was disappointingly apathetic. “It was probably just a curious person, there’s nothing to worry about,” said one of the officers with obvious indifference. Mark and Erika, frustrated and feeling ignored, insisted that the incident was too serious to be dismissed so lightly. The nonchalant attitude of the authorities only intensified the feeling of exposure and helplessness that already weighed on them inside what was supposed to be their safe haven.
