What did they find?
During the interrogations, both Erika and Mark tried to get answers, repeatedly asking the agent: “What did you find at the bottom of the well?” However, neither of them received a clear or satisfactory answer. It was clear that the police had discovered something significant down there, but for some reason they refused to reveal what it was. In the end, they simply sent the Johnsons back home, with clear instructions not to talk to anyone about what had happened – and the uncomfortable feeling that they were at the center of something much bigger than they could have imagined.

Wanting to prove their innocence
The couple desperately wanted to prove their innocence – they had already been treated like criminals and hated every second of that injustice – so they decided to follow the police’s instructions to the letter. They couldn’t receive visitors until the sinkhole problem had been solved, nor could they talk to anyone about what had happened. Even so, curiosity consumed them inside. No matter how hard they tried to distract themselves, they couldn’t stop thinking about the same question: what was hidden down there anyway?
