Darting eyes
Dad avoided looking at me, his eyes darting away as though he was trying to avoid something. “Dad, what’s the real deal?” I tried to entice him out by asking. In an attempt to lighten the tone, my spouse added his voice. “All we want is for tonight to go well, shall we?” “He said.” Dad, however, shrugged and rejected his attempt, refusing to concede. The night was overshadowed by Dad’s stubbornness, and I could feel my fury building.

Root of the grudge
Dad continued despite my husband’s efforts to lighten the situation. “You’ve made decisions that I can’t support,” he said forcefully, reverting to what appeared to be his greatest grievance. I became more and more frustrated with every syllable. In an attempt to defuse the situation, I said, “We want to understand, Dad, but now isn’t the time.” However, he had little interest in peace, and the animosity kept the discussion heated and unresolved.
